The Need
When it comes to natural and cultural resources, the Town of Deerfield is at once blessed and cursed. Its fertile valleys, with some of the most productive farmland in the world; the Pocumtuck Ridge and western hills, which provide scenic backdrops as well as habitat for an incredible variety of wildlife; its quaint, historic village centers; the beautiful Connecticut River and Deerfield River, all serve to define Deerfield, in many people’s minds, as the quintessential New England town, an extremely desirable place to live, work, and raise a family. Here also lies the curse and the reason that the Deerfield Land Trust’s work is so important.
Deerfield is at risk of becoming a victim of its well-deserved reputation. Although development pressures are causing land values to go through the roof throughout the valley, the desirability of having a Deerfield address seems to be putting added pressure on land in Deerfield.
